Let’s be honest: a playroom can either feel like a magical wonderland or a crime scene after a toy explosion. The difference? Having the right setup. With the right storage, supplies, and toys, your playroom can go from “I’m drowning in Legos” to “Wow, this actually looks intentional.”
Here are 25 must-have items for your play area—organized into the essentials that keep you sane (supplies) and the toys that keep your kids busy (and hopefully off your couch).
Part 1: Playroom Supplies & Equipment (1–7)
These are the behind-the-scenes MVPs that make your play area look less like chaos and more like Pinterest.
- Plastic Bins – The ultimate “just toss it in and pretend it’s organized” hack. Perfect for when company is coming over in five minutes. Also great for sensory bin storage and teaching your kids how to ask for help when they want to open one.
- Rope Bins – For when you want storage but also want to feel like Joanna Gaines would approve. (Bonus: These bins fit nicely in the shelving unit posted next)
- White Shelving Unit – Basically the backbone of any playroom. Without it, your bins are just… piles. This one is good quality and has held up great with my 2 little ones.
- Magnetic Boards – Great for hanging them on the wall in your play room, poses a good opportunity for learning about animals, food, letters, numbers – you name it!
- Magnets – Affordable, cheerful, and endlessly entertaining. My kids use these on the magnetic boards, the dishwasher, the oven, and even the fireplace 🤣
- Learning Posters with Thumb Tacks – Educational décor that says, “Look, I’m a fun mom and a smart mom.” I tend to put these around where they make sense, for example, food by the kitchen, emotions by the ever falling over block towers (IYKYK).
- Table and Chairs – The command center for crafts, snacks, and very serious negotiations about who gets the blue crayon. This is also our sensory bin spot. The spot where we serve all play kitchen made meals and where we cheers and drink all the imaginary tea we can 🫖
Part 2: Toys Worth the Space (8–25)
Now for the fun part—the toys that will keep your kids busy, learning, and maybe even playing independently (a girl can dream).
- Mesh Bags – A miracle for containing those 4,000 toy pieces that multiply overnight.
- Play-Doh – Messy? Yes. Keeps these kids busy though! I recommend this pasta making one, so many play options.
- Kinetic Sand – Play-Doh’s cooler, calmer cousin. Bonus: it’s oddly satisfying for adults, too. I put the sand right into the previously mentioned bins. I add in figurines, little spoons, little tongs, treasures, you name it. When we are done playing I snap that bad boy bin up and put it out of reach. Rule #1 – the sand stays in the bin. 🫡
- Melissa & Doug Grocery – Let your little one “shop” for food without you spending $200 at Target.
- Melissa & Doug Grocery Store Food & Role Play Set – Because every pretend store needs fully stocked shelves, and a cashier in costume. The Grocery store does the classic scanning beep too.
- Melissa & Doug Canned Food Set – Sturdy pretend groceries that won’t roll under the couch.
- Play Wallet – Teach them money skills early… or at least let them practice before they spend your money 😅
- Kids Kitchen Set or This One – Toddlers whip up five-star plastic meals, and you get to pretend to love them. I love watching my kids in action with the kitchen set!
- Melissa & Doug Wooden Food – A timeless playroom classic, and these are such good quality!
- Wooden Food to Cut or the Plastic Version – Both versions give kids the thrill of “cooking,” minus the sharp knives. We love that.
- Color Sorting Food Baskets – Learning colors and organizing? This is basically sneaky mom genius.
- Pots and Pans – Because how will you make soup? And how will you cook strawberries with cucumbers and steak all at once?
- Magnetic Blocks – STEM disguised as fun. And unlike Legos, stepping on them won’t make you cry. These are my one child’s number 1 favorite toy, we have at least 4 sets of these! 🧱
- Puzzles – Brain-building and a guaranteed few minutes of quiet for mom.
- Turtle Shell Stepping Stones – The “floor is lava” game just got an upgrade. These shells are really good quality and they come with a twister-esque flair.
- Kids Play Tent – Available in two sizes, so siblings can either share… or stake their separate claims. Plus, everyone needs a tent home for their stuffies.
- Kids Rainbow Tunnel – Perfect for crawling, giggles, and burning off endless toddler energy. This is also great for building an obstacle course. We even sometimes connect the tunnel to the tent!
- DUPLO Lego Starter Set – Legos, but toddler-sized. Less choking hazard, less foot pain. DUPLO has some really great little sets, this one will get you started!
